Darko Macan on SFeraKon

Darko Macan (Zagreb, 1966) is a Croatian author, editor and illustrator, who graduated from Zagreb University in 1994 with a degree in history and archeology.  He’s been drawning and writting comics since he was 8. Unfortunately, nothing was published from this early period, but luckily we can track his works since the 1980s. His passion for comics is also reflected in his graduation thesis Croatian Comics Betwen 1945 – 1954 (Hrvatski strip: 1945.-54.)

Darko Macan has created and collaborated on many comics, essays and SF&F works (mostly in Croatian). Under the pseudonym Cecile Quintal he wrote essays about comics. In 1993 he broke into the American comics industry when he and fellow Croatian artist Edvin Biuković submitted their work to Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote comics for Vertigo, Marvel Comics and Disney comics and was nominated twice for the prestigeous Eisner Award (Grendel Tales: Devils and Deaths and Prayer to Sun – translated and published in France, Germany, Spain and Japan).

As a writer he has written about seventy science fiction and fantasy short stories, two science fiction novels and six children’s books. He is editor-in-chief of the Q strip comics magazine and was editor of nine Annual Collections of Croatian SF stories. For the last five years Darko Macan has been running the Writing Workshop Macanova fantastična (m)učionica at SFera (Science Fiction Society from Zagreb).
