Stockholm report

Croatian SF Delegation recently returned from a very interesting and well organized 33 th European Convention.

Apart from a rich programme (with lot of lectures on SF literature!) mostly in English, the fans enjoyed the author’s readings, group discussions, workshops, movies,  cultural presentations (i.e. City Walk in the Old Town, beer tasting, tea tasting, massage) and of course the Multinational Fan Party.  Congratulations to Swedish organizers!
We also took over the ESFS flag at the Closing Ceremony which we will traditionally pass on next year in Zagreb to the organizers of the succeeding Eurocon.

What about the future?

Well, it is official. Eurocon 2013 will be held in Kiev, Ukraine. The organizers announced the same venue as the last time, attached to the book fair, and also added some incentives, like a visit to the Pripyat and Chernobyl  power plant. There are two bids for 2014 as well; Dublin and Romania. Dublin is scheduled for a weekend after Worldcon 2014 bid  in London, while Romanians did not give any details yet.  Already, there is a quite serious pre-bid for 2015 from St. Petersburg.

We also have to say we are quite proud with the winners of the 2011 ESFS awards; magazine Ubiq, fanzine Parsek, and artist Ivan Mavrović. Check below for the complete list of the winners:

  • European Grand Master: Sam Lundwall (Sweden)
  • Best Author: Alastair Reynolds (United Kingdom)
  • Best Artist: David Hardy (United Kingdom)
  • Best Translator: Attila Németh (Hungary)
  • Best Magazine (tie): Ubiq (Croatia) & Fantlab.ru (Russian Federation)
  • Best Publisher: Lenizdat (Russian Federation)
  • Best Promoter (tie): Louis Savy (United Kingdom) & Oleg Kolesnikov (Russian Federation)

Spirit of Dedication:

  • Artist: Ivan Mavrović (Croatia)
  • Best Fanzine: Parsek (Croatia)
  • Best Dramatic Presentation: Aniara (Sweden)

    Hey all,

It was great to meet you in Stockholm! I am really looking forward to Zagreb next year!

Just a slight correction, the Dublin bid for 2014 is the weekend after the London worldcon 2014 bid, which is in August of that year.

I was rather surprised to learn from a friend that I have won ‘Best Artist’ in the ESFS Awards, as this is the first I have heard of it! Shouldn’t I have been told first — ? What have I won? ;-)
